The Lost Apothecary

by Sarah Penner

Told from three perspectives, herbal potions, dark magic and betrayal can all be found in this book.  First there is Nella who grew up in her mother's eighteenth-century London apothecary and is highly skilled with all sorts of traditional healing methods.  She only uses her powers for good until her heart is completely broken.  Then, cleverly disguised poisons are created and sold for women to protect themselves against oppressive men.  Secondly, Eliza is only 12 years old but becomes Nella's customer on behalf of her mistress.  Although naive, her version of the events come as one who is coming of age, learning about all the things life may offer, both good and evil.  The third perspective is from modern day historian, Caroline, who is hoping to find more information about a small apothecary jar she found at the edge of the River Thames with a small bear etched on the side.

This is a story of women networking to help women.  I loved this little book, staying up late to finish it!
